Jim Ovia founded Zenith Bank in May 1990, with operations commencing in July of the same year. This was at a time when Nigeria's banking industry was operating in a difficult economic environment. The bank was incorporated as a private limited liability company with approximately US$4 million in initial shareholders' funds. Ovia's vision was to build a modern financial institution driven by technology, professionalism, strong corporate governance and excellent customer service.

Ovia established Cyberspace Limited, an information and communications technology (ICT) company in 1995.
